Love

In a rare acknowledgement that his brother is a human being with feelings and not a slug, Zachary wanted to buy Benjamin a fish to replace the late Crabby.  Zach never spends any of his allowance, so he had the cash, although I told him I’d go in with him.  So, after camp yesterday, we took a family field trip to Petco and came home with Lovey, a male Betta fish.

Lovey is now happily ensconced in Crabby’s old aquarium, swimming around the pink plastic tree Ben bought with his savings.

I can’t tell you how many times this morning I’ve been in that room to make sure the damned fish is still alive.

That’s very sweet of Zachary. It always gives me hope when I see that kind of generosity of spirit.

Maybe you should use one of those video baby monitors so you don’t have to keep going in there.

    Zachary’s a good brother.

So sweet. And don’t worry. If I haven’t killed our betta fish yet (and I’ve been secretly trying) you should be fine.

Sometimes the love and selflessness they show one another is so strong it causes me real heart pain. And that they can so quickly go from harassing a sibling to then being a defender of the same kid. Constantly amazing.

Good luck with the fish. Damn things live forever. You may still be feeding the stupid thing when your kids are grown.
