Question 5: The Talk

I’m working on a speech right now for a client I love. Unfortunately, my husband is out of town and there are two early dismissals this week. On the bright side, Mark of Athena came out today, so I’m essentially down a child for at least a few days. I may not be posting much for the next week, depending on how the work goes, but I’ll get to all the questions. For today, a quick one:

What book or books have you used to deal with sex and puberty for the boys? My oldest is 8 and curious, I believe in facts not cutesy language etc. Any thoughts?

Yeah, so when Zach was seven-and-a-half and had asked no questions, I was starting to get worried he’d hear it from a peer. I bought It’s So Amazing. It was incredibly age-appropriate and explained the biology very well. He loved it and will use the correct terms from it all the time. Sometimes, I still find him pulling it off the shelf and re-reading, just because it’s interesting.

We used Its not the Stork. Same result. Mine was fascinated by how can only one sperm penetrate the egg. As a biologist, I was so proud.

Until he raises his hand during third-grade math to inform the other students that only one sperm can penetrate the egg.

I vaguely remember a book titled “What’s Happening to Me?” that my mom got me when I was a pre-teen. It was realistic cartoon and addressed both female and male anatomy. If I recall, it addressed puberty and conception (I think) in a way that was both fun, embarrassing (I for some reason hid the book so that my mom didn’t know I had it – which didn’t make sense since she bought it for me) and informative. It may be worth a look if you can still find it.

We have yet to deal with the questions, but I will have to keep this in mind when the time comes. Thanks!
